Are you a Gmail user?
Are you frustrated with the 'Mickey Mouse' mail client in Netscape?
Gmail can now be used as the alternative mail system for Netscape.
Instead of starting up the Netscape e-mail client your Netscape will magically bring up the Gmail you know and love; with your Gmail address directory available and all the other features of the Gmail user interface from the 'create message' dialog box. Your messages sent from Netscape will be logged in your Gmail 'mail_out', and if you ask for a delivery report or receipt notification, and by some miracle the recipient has Gmail or some other top-of-the-line e-mail system that knows how to do these things, then the acknowledgements will come back to your Gmail client, and be correlated with your copy of the message you sent.
A preview of the Gmail 5.1 functionality that allows Netscape to become Gmail aware is available as a free-standing utility, compatible with Gmail 5.0.1.
This new functionality is a standard part of the next release of Gmail (then in the options menu) and allows you to:
Only versions 4.x of Netscape are supported. Both 32-bit and 16- bit versions of Netscape 4.03 have been tested. The small setup program supplied with the DLL verifies the validity of the version, and installs or deinstalls Gmail as the Netscape alternative mail client.
You can pick-up the self-extracting files:
GNS16.EXE
GNS32.EXE
GNS32.EXE is for use with 32-bit versions of Gmail and Netscape, it self-extracts to 2 files, GNSAPI32.DLL and GNSSETUP.EXE. Extract or copy the files to the 5.0.1 gmail\bin32 directory.
GNS16.EXE is for use with 16-bit versions of Gmail and Netscape, it self-extracts to 2 files, GNSAPI16.DLL and GNSSETUP.EXE. Extract or copy the files to the 5.0.1 gmail\bin directory
To install, STOP NETSCAPE! then execute the GNSSETUP program: gnssetup.exe
and to deinstall, STOP NETSCAPE! then:
gnssetup.exe -u
This 5.1 preview version of the DLL can co-exist with the current Gmail 5.0 production version.
